Rotogravure is a direct, rotary printing method in which images are engraved on a copper cylinder. The cylinder is then inked, and the ink is transferred onto paper through a system made of small cells of different depths.
The deeper cells hold more ink, making the print darker and shinier. This method is particularly renowned for its ability to maintain ink gloss and coverage capacity.
In Italy, the word rotocalco (rotogravure) has often been associated to news magazines, since this technique was widely used for the printing of large-scale magazines in the past. Today it plays a dominant role in the high-quality, long-run packaging printing.
